It’s interesting to watch trends emerge and evolve on the internet. I remember right when I first saw YouTube, I never thought online video would be a big deal. And then it exploded. Same with hotornot and friendster. I remember when those services came out, and I thought they were kind of cool. I never imagined they would be the basis for the next internet boom.

Well, I like to think I learn from my mistakes. The trend I’m seeing now is persistent stream of consciousness. This one is even harder for me to get, but I have no doubt we’re going to be seeing a lot of activity in this area. Think companies like Twitter, Justin.tv, and ustream.tv.

These ventures are changing the way people communicate. They’re taking it to another, somewhat scary, level. You think MySpace and Google eliminate what little privacy you have? Try 24/7 video streaming of your personal life. Or even something as simple as Twitter, text messaging constant updates to let everyone always know what you’re doing.

People seem have a constant need to interact and be part of the “hive.” They want to know what everyone is doing and they want everyone to know what they’re doing. I guess it’s not for everyone, but technology is finally bringing us one step closer to the borg.

I’ve tried twitter. It’s kind of cool. But it takes a lot of effort to constantly text message stuff in. I think I’ll just wait for the embeddedable cornea cam. Oh, and next on the list, genetically contextual advertising from our brave new big brothers at Google: 23 and Me. Sweet.

Seriously though, expect some big ventures to come out in this “always on” space.

Networking in Hawaii

I’m not sure if I’ve ever mentioned the distinct lack of business networking events in Hawaii, but there’s definately a need for more. With that in mind Rachel (the ED of HiBEAM.org) and I started Beer and Business (beerandbusiness.com) to connect local investors, entrepreneurs, and executives in a casual settings (with drinks of course). Our first event was on Thursday March 8th, and it was a huge success. We had a great turn out, and I personally met some fantastic people. Here are some photos from the party.
